Take This Quiz;
Win Valentine’s Day
(And Every Other
Gift-Giving Occasion)

So you have yourself a sweetie. Congratulations! You like this person a lot, huh? That must mean you’re currently in Cupid mode and have some amazing Valentine’s Day plans in the works.

Wait … no?! You have no idea what to get them or how to express your cat heart-eyes emoji feelings for them (other then send them lots of cat heart-eye emojis)? Fear not. We know that special occasion gift-giving can be a daunting task, and we have a little tool at our disposal to share with you that will help you zone in on just the right thing to make your Valentine swoon.

A quiz! A love language quiz to be exact.

We’ll spare you the details, but some fancy relationship expert named Dr. Gary Chapman came up with a personality test of sorts called The Five Love Languages as a shortcut to help figure out the distinct way that every human prefers to receive love.

According to Chapman, everyone has a core love language and it falls under one of these 5 categories:

Acts of Service

Physical Touch

Words of Affirmation

Receiving Gifts

Quality Time

But what does this have to do with Valentine's Day you ask? Well, the key to winning at the gift-giving game is to figure out your sig other's love language and match the gift best suited to it. You can take Chapman's 5 minute quiz here. Or for a shortcut to the shortcut, we have broken down each love language type below—complete with gift ideas for each.

Read below and then carry on, Cupid.

Quality Time

This is your extrovert—someone who thrives on togetherness.

How to gift them: For this person, nothing beats your undivided attention. They just want your presence—preferably unplugged. Set up a "mushy marathon" for them centered around your favorite activities to do together. Or opt in to experience something that interests them more than you. Take an online class or pick up a new hobby together. Teach them about something you love (like: skateboarding, basketball or chess).

Words of Affirmation

These are the romantics. They like to be love-bombed by language.

How to gift them: The easiest way is just to express yourself—either verbally or written. And to do it often. A hand-written note or card goes a looong way with these lovers. As does compliments and public declarations of love. Think: the grand gesture—as seen in every rom-com movie ever. Or, as a more low-key option: a sweet Instagram dedication, flowers and a note left in their locker, or a surprise yard sign greeting.

Physical Touch

This type just wants to be near you—or people in general. They’re happiest after a bear hug (with masks on, of course) or when you’re holding hands in public (don’t forget to hand sanitize).

How to gift them: They appreciate experiences that they can FEEL. Pamper them! Snuggle them! Do a physical activity together—like play a VR game like Beat Saber—or learn the latest TikTok dance together. Other ideas: Luxe bath bombs, an at-home manicure kit or a weighted blanket.

Acts of Service

These are the “actions speak louder than words” people. They feel adoration when you DO for them.

How to gift them: Make the plans. Prepare a meal for them (easy: smoothie. harder: pasta). Help them with a project/problem (hang or fix something, or just offer a solution). Make or buy a coupon book for them—with personalized tasks or experiences—and let them redeem as necessary. For Vday: Set up a candy buffet for them featuring all their favorite treats.

Receiving Gifts

This person feels love best via a tangible item. They often get a bad rep, or are labeled as materialistic, but it’s actually that they are just super sentimental. They love the idea of having a physical item, something that they can actually see and hold that says to them every time that they look at it, "I saw this and I thought of you."

How to gift them: Easy! With gifts. They don’t have to be grand—the more thoughtful the better. Think: gourmet snacks (like Mochi ice cream!), something nostalgic, or one-of-a-kind (Uncommon Goods is a good resource for atypical trinkets), or even something practical. Getting them something that they NEED fills them up too. Lastly, when in doubt—just get them an epic candle. Everyone loves epic candles. And hoodies. Luckily we make a rad one—it's great for girls too.
