d.RT: Purchasing your first suit is a rite of passage for a young man ... do you remember yours? What was the experience of purchasing it like?

Oliver: I believe everyone should have at least one suit in their closet. The first suit I bought was in 2019 for the red carpet premiere for The Lion King remake. Knowing I was going to be in the same theater as Beyoncé, Donald Glover and so many other talented and influential people, I knew I had to choose the right suit. I went with a timeless dark blue blazer and matching shoes, with white pants and shirt. My favorite part of the outfit was the ruby owl emblem I had pinned to the blazer.

d.RT: What is your go-to outfit if you’re dressing only for yourself ... not the internet, not your peers, not trying to meet anyone else’s expectations?

Oliver: I’ve always been fond of the idea of standing out—even for just myself. The confidence that clothes can bring to oneself is amazing. To me, there are no limits or boundaries that someone should place on themselves in regards to their fashion. I’ve been known to wear shorts and a long fur coat while spending hours alone in the studio working on a song. I feel good when I am wearing that and that’s all that matters.

d.RT: Who or what inspires you?

Oliver: Those from my ethnicity provide a lot of inspiration for my style. To me, Asian-inspired fashion stands because of its subtlety—it’s always the perfect mix of comfort, style, and simplicity. I’ve also been inspired by other performer’s style throughout the years. Growing up, I was mesmerized by artists like Justin Bieber, Michael Jackson, and Prince—all who really expanded my knowledge around fashion.
